Description
White pomfrets are benthic on sandy and muddy bottoms at a depth of 80 metres. Oceanic, migrating north or south depending on the distribution of warm currents, the White Pomfret migrate north in the northern hemisphere in summer and south in winter.Adult white pomfret feeds primarily on worms, salmon, jellyfish, and other zooplankton groups.
Pomfrets have a thin ridged patch of skin on top of the head that extends above the base of the pectoral fins. The caudal fin is deeply forked, and the lower lobe is usually elongated. While the length varies, pomfrets generally range between 30 to 60cm.
Pomfret’s meat has a hint of sweetness in its flavour and thus steaming or frying is the ideal cooking method for this delicacy.
