Description
Platinum Royal Emperor (Jelawat) is produced only in the Rajang River, in Sibu Sarawak. The Platinum Royal Emperor fish is dark grey in colour, close to black, with pearl white belly, hence given the name 黑金苏丹. The common breed of Emperor fish is pearl white in colour, with red or faint gold fins. The best Emperor fish is not only determined by freshness, but also the source of the fish and its size.
The Platinum Royal Emperor is rare and is the second most expensive river fish in Malaysia. This fish can weigh more than 10 kg. Its meat is fragrant, smooth and rich in fat. The ideal weight to consume an Emperor fish is around 3-5kg. For smaller Emperor fish, the minimum weight for consumption is advised at 1kg, where the fish can still be fat and fragrant. The Platinum Royal Emperor feeds on the fruits that fall near the riverbank thus giving its flesh a subtly sweet taste.
Steaming is the ideal cooking method for this delicacy.
